relationships that build community
Local Community Engagement
Continuing Education is positioned in the heart of downtown Hamilton, at King
& James Streets.
is a hub of community activities with rooms available for events, meetings and,
of course, classes.
We support the
downtown Hamilton community through our participation in the cultural events
that bring vibrancy and recognition to our great downtown core, including SuperCrawl and
At the 2018 SuperCrawl, we partnered with the Socrates Project to create a space for families looking for respite from the heat and
stimulation, and for all people wanting to know a bit more about the work McMaster Continuing Education and the Socrates Project are doing. Our water bottles and filling station, photo booth,
movie room and face and mural paintings were big hits with the hundreds of
people that popped in to say “hello”.
?We were delighted to be invited to participate in the launch of
the Soul Saturday festival; organized by the Downtown Hamilton BIA and its collective
members, the festival showcased the revitalization of the King William food and
music scene. Together with the McMaster Athletics Department, we organized and ran a Kidz
Zone full of fun activities and games for the afternoon.
Community Learning Partnerships
In an era of uncertain facts and fake news, public
libraries and universities share a commitment to learning as the foundation of
democracy. As credible and trusted sources of information and knowledge,
McMaster University Centre for Continuing Education and the Hamilton Public
Library partnered with the City of Hamilton’s Our Future Hamilton Community
Vision to create the Conversations that Matter Speakers series designed to
provide Hamiltonians with credible and reliable information to make voting
Talks, a partnership with the Political Science department, featured experts from McMaster University as they discussed “The Trump Effect”
in national and international politics, racism and resistance, women’s rights,
Remembrance in a Changing Media
Landscape, another great partnership with the
Hamilton Public Library, the City of Hamilton and Veterans Affairs, was a
speakers event to learn about the changing ways we remember and document the
experiences and sacrifices of men and women in uniform
These speaker series and events contribute to a deeper understanding of individuals' roles as
citizens in Hamilton, Canada and the world.
We are honoured to sponsor the work of Hamilton’s Neighbourhood
Leadership Institute as it supports emerging resident leaders from Hamilton’s
priority neighbourhoods to receive leadership training.
In 2018 we sponsored the Our Future Hamilton Annual
Summit, which explores current issues as identified by residents and
stakeholders through the Community Vision initiative. The theme this year was
Public Safety in a Connected World.
